The Fruition of Kundalini

If properly practiced and integrated, Kundalini does not have to lead to the dan- gerous situation of a Kundalini emergency. In capable hands, she can be raised in a controlled, measured way. Such a path requires the guidance of a competent teach- er who knows what they’re doing and can help the student avoid common pitfalls.  The fruition of Kundalini awakening, if you can manage to bring it to its comple- tion, is achieving the state of Sat-Chit-Ananda

This phrase means “Being, Con- sciousness, and Bliss.” The Being is the absolute ground of being, while Con- sciousness refers to the pure, total Universal Consciousness. Bliss is nothing like ordinary pleasure, such as orgasm, but is a complete and permanent state of spir- itual elation.

Example of Kundalini Experience

Once of the most famous popularizers of Kundalini in the world was a government clerk from Kashmir named Gopi Krishna, who underwent an accidental Kundalini awakening in 1937 at the age of thirty-four.

He was sitting in meditation, imagining a lotus at the crown of his head, when “suddenly, with a roar like that of a waterfall, I felt a stream of liquid light entering my brain through the spinal cord.” He was en- gulfed in waves of light until he lost all ordinary awareness and became only “a vast circle of consciousness in which the body was but a point, bathed in light and in a state of exultation and happiness impossible to describe.” 1  What followed were arduous years of struggle with his mental and physical health.

He swung back and forth between ecstatic states of bliss, and depression and hal- lucinations of being burned. He soon came to see his meditation practice as re- sponsible for this condition and discontinued it, but he could not relieve his suf- fering.  After about twelve years, he regained his psychological equilibrium. He began hav- ing mystical experiences of merging with what he described as “shoreless ocean of consciousness,” and a profound peace settled on him.

Gopi Krishna was lucky that he was eventually able to integrate the unexpected eruption of Kundalini in his Subtle body. It could have gone differently for him, but he had a supportive wife, a stable job, and a culture that provided him with a reference point for understanding what he was going through. He went on to become an international ambassador for Kundalini.

Convinced that Kundalini awakening represented the next milestone in human evolution, he traveled the world telling his story.  What’s so remarkable about Gopi Krishna is that he was, by his own account, an ordinary man who, aside from reading a bit about it, had very little familiarity with the idea of Kundalini.

Although he had practiced meditation for seventeen years at the time of his awakening and refined his ability to the point where he could sit in concentration for hours on end, he was not a yogi and was not performing compli- cated practices intended to arouse Kundalini’s energy. His story shows that such an awakening is available to anyone with determination, and in fact can happen to anyone accidentally. It also illustrates both the dangers and promises of Kundalini.
